چکیده

conclusions salivary free and total sialic acid, and total protein were higher in the paan consumers compared to non-consumers. due to the carcinogenic effect of smokeless tobacco, measurement of these parameters in saliva may be useful in early detection of oral cancer. results the concentration of salivary free sialic acid (23.21 ± 18.98 mg/l) was significantly increased in paan consumers. the concentration of salivary total sialic acid (tsa) (39.57 ± 26.58 mg/l) and total protein (0.77 ± 0.81 mg/ml) showed increases in paan consumers, however, the results were not statistically significant. patients and methods in this cross-sectional study, unstimulated saliva of 94 subjects (44 paan consumers and 50 non-consumers) who were referred to the oral medicine department of the dentistry school of zahedan were collected. salivary free and total sialic acid, and total protein concentration were measured by standard biochemical methods, and the obtained data were analyzed using spss 20 through the non-parametric mann-whitney test. background smokeless tobacco chewing is one of the known risk factors for oral cancer. it is consumed widely by residents of southeastern iran. objectives in this study, salivary free and total sialic acid, and total protein were compared in paan consumers and non-consumers.

Salivary Lipid Peroxidation and Total Sialic Acid Levels in Smokers and Smokeless Tobacco Users as Maraş Powder

Maraş powder (MP), a different type of smokeless tobacco (ST) and prepared from a tobacco of species Nicotiana rustica Linn, is widely used in Turkey. We aimed to investigate the effects of MP on salivary total sialic acid (TSA) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and to compare these parameters in smokers and MP users (MPUs). The salivary TSA and MDA concentrations were significantly higher in th...

Salivary thiocyanate levels among tobacco users, non-users, and passive smokers: A biochemical study

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The prevalence of tobacco use and its associated mortality is increasing worldwide. Biomarkers in saliva, such as thiocyanate levels, have been shown to be a suitable indicator for smoking. The present study is conducted to determine the thiocyanate levels in saliva and compare them among tobacco (smoking and smokeless) users, passive smoker...

Clinical pharmacokinetics of theophylline and levels of alpha 1-acid glycoprotein in smokeless tobacco users.

Elimination half-life and apparent volume of distribution of theophylline were determined in ten healthy volunteers who used smokeless tobacco (snuff or chewing tobacco) regularly but did not smoke cigarettes. Serum concentrations of the acute phase reactant alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AAG) were also measured. The elimination half-life of theophylline was 9.32 +/- 3.40 hours (mean +/- standard d...

Determinants of Salivary Cotinine among Smokeless Tobacco Users: A Cross-Sectional Survey in Bangladesh

INTRODUCTION More than 80% of all smokeless tobacco (ST) products in the world are consumed in South Asia; yet little is known about their consumption behaviour, addictiveness, and toxic properties. This paper, for the first time, describes associations between salivary cotinine concentrations among ST users in Bangladesh and their socio-demographic characteristics and tobacco use behaviours. ...
